As a new student arriving at USF you have a special opportunity to take a First Year Seminar. These courses are designed and taught by faculty with a passion for the topic, and enrollment is limited to 18 students Ð all of them are new to campus, like you. Over the course of the semester, you will get to know your professor and classmates well. Nearly all of the seminars count toward the core and are open to all majors. So, in place of a regular core class, we encourage you to try a First Year seminar. Most seminars include enrichment activities like guest speakers, and field trips into the city. You could explore Golden Gate Park, Haight Ashbury, Japantown, the Mission, go to the San Francisco opera or test the waters at Lake Merced. You might learn to cook food from around the world, or blow glass with local artists or work together with your classmates to spread awareness about a humanitarian cause. If you are an incoming first year student, you may register for a FYS (or First Year Seminar) which has the course number 195. If you are a new transfer student, you may register for a TYS (or Transfer Year Seminar) which as the course number 295. Spaces are limited, so students may only register for one seminar. Find out more about the FYS program by visiting our website. You can find it by going to USFÕs welcome page, scrolling to the bottom, and clicking on the tan square. To find out about specific courses being offered next term, click on the orange button part way down the page on the right.
